HERE IS MY PLAN: Mama Mia!

“When people ask how I got to be this way, I say I could give them the long version, or just cut to the chase and have them meet my mom!” – Gabriel Andreas

How are you showing up in the world?

Traditionally, more flowers are purchased for Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. My mother is 94 and living her wisdom daily. Every morning, I call my mother and have a cup of tea. Sometimes she answers and we have a lovely chat. I especially like when her philosophical voice shows up to speak about her point of view regarding current events. Lucky for me and my siblings we have our mom to thank for building a foundation of tolerance for people making choices that don’t make sense to us.  She gave us permission to color outside of society’s norms. Since this is Mother’s Day weekend, I decided to share some of mom’s sage advice. Here are a few of her standard messages that I gathered from my eight siblings over the years:

  • “It is important to have a circle of friends.”
  • “You can bring anyone home, and they will be welcomed to join our gatherings.”
  • “You are always invited to our party. I want you to know that you are free to come or not. We will have fun either way. You are free to choose. “
  • “Holidays and special occasions can be celebrated on any day at any time. If your significant other’s family is strict about celebration timelines, you are free to play holiday at their house. We can celebrate on another day. You are free to choose.”
  • “Just because their priorities are not your priorities doesn’t make them wrong.”
  • “Go to therapy.”

Mom coached us to consciously choose what we wanted and how to best navigate our lives. She welcomed and encouraged us to see other perspectives and be open to explore what else is possible. Experimenting was easier with the knowledge that mom was available to emotionally dissect these experiences before, during and after we made our choices.  And when her wisdom seemed to be failing us, she would recommend therapy as an option to build our arsenal of relationship tools. What would it take to ask for help? How are you showing up in the world?

$100.00: for self-care.

Traditionally at this time of year I frame a photo of my mother. Embedded in the frame matting will be a note or card with her handwriting. Seeing words scrolled in her penmanship feels like being bubble wrapped in loving light energy. Love starts with me. What can I choose now?

$0: Priceless: Mother

“Acceptance, tolerance, bravery, compassion. These are the things my mom taught me.” -Lady Gaga

The first official Mother’s Day was established 117 years ago. It started in honor of Ann Reeves Jarvis. She was a Peace Activist who facilitated education opportunities to promote community health. Her events were called “Mother’s Day Work Clubs.”  These events were invitations for women to create a better world for themselves as well as their communities. In 2024, multiple current events are inviting us to stand up for others and contribute our voices as well as resources to support the well-being of women. What can you choose now?

Respond to life with love. Repeat. What would it take?

$64,400.00:  In Mother’s name, these dollars are supporting family and friends who need a therapy “tune-up” to help them navigate life stuff. Including but not limited to the judgement dragon warfare generated by the decreasing of a woman’s right to choose the best health options for herself. What can we do to make a difference in our world? We can respond to life with love. Acknowledge all our feelings and then choose to be kinder to ourselves, love others and strive to be a better human. What if it is that simple? Everyone can do something to make a difference. What if it is up to us? What can you choose now?   Respond with love.  How are you showing up in the world?

What are you contributing to live in a better world in 2024?

$1000.00: for a date with my husband. This week’s date includes watching family movies and scouring through old family photos that captured life moments with our loved ones. We are sharing stories about our moms. How loved can you stand it?

FLOW FIVE FRIDAY: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.

$5.00: This week’s five-dollar bill is inside the book called Are You, My Mother? Written and illustrated by PD Eastman. The book is currently somewhere inside a Free Little Library.  I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.

Five Increments of Time: Every morning I make a cup of tea and call my mother.   Being there. How are you “Flowing Five” this week?

Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time. Whenever I feel sad or shaken about news or life stuff, I acknowledge all my feelings and take time to do a Rampage of Gratitude exercise. Directions for this practice are as follows: set a timer for 1-5 minutes and then write down as many things that you are grateful for before the buzzer goes off.  Next read the list out loud. Then ask, “how can this life turn out way better than I can imagine?” This exercise helps me to calibrate and balance my thinking and feelings. How does it get even better than that? What are you doing or not doing for self-care?

Planet Awareness: Contributing to the health of Earth.

We are planting happy, little trees this weekend.

What are you doing for the health of our planet?

Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention:

This week I am supporting my friend Casey. One of her living intentions is to be a voice advocating for resources to support single moms. Casey was raised by a single mom when her military dad was killed in action. Each year she hosts events to raise dollars and awareness, contributing resources to support single moms in her community. One way that you can help support Casey’s living intention is to volunteer or donate to assist moms in your community. Investing in moms matters.

Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
