HERE IS MY PLAN: Nurture a Garden

“Everything that slows us down and invites more patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is offering us help to live a better life. Gardening is an instrument of grace.” – May Sarton

How are you showing up in the world?

Over the years, several of my friends have lost their homes due to natural disasters. There have been fires, tornados and even an avalanche. In the last few weeks Mother Nature has produced extreme weather swings resulting in snow, tornados, torrid rains, and unprecedented flooding in many United States communities. Climate change or not, there are landscapes drowning, some being blown away and others eroding shorelines with rising river waters. These weather phenomena affect the lifestyle and livelihoods of many families. Communities that have been spared the ravages of nature or war can help lessen the effects by planting food gardens at homes and in public parks. What if we can make a difference by planting a Victory Garden this season.

How are you showing up in the world?

$100.00: for self-care.  I am buying organic soil to cultivate a happy, healthy, container garden on my back deck. And I love that!

$0: Priceless: Memories of walking in my dad’s garden.

“A person who is growing a garden, if she/he is growing it organically, is improving peace in the world!” – Wendell Berry

Dad created gardens that were overflowing with organic edible vegetation.  He grew up on a farm during World War II. Globally at that time food was rationed and difficult to transport. World leaders encouraged people to plant Victory Gardens to help sustain their families and communities. Dad learned to plant, harvest, and preserve fruits, herbs, and vegetables.  He moved to the city after the Korean War, but never stopped growing food. Climate Victory Gardening is the modern-day concept and practice of consciously planting healthy local ecosystems. Victory Gardens address both local as well as global issues with food being part of the solution. Every action matters. What are you planting this season?

$74,900.00: I am contributing to Green America, a nonprofit/for-impact organization whose vision is “to work for a world where all people have enough, where all communities are healthy and safe, and where the bounty of the Earth is preserved for all the generations to come.” Victory gardening can be any size. Everyone can do something to make a difference. What if it is up to us? What can you choose now?   Respond with love.  How are you showing up in the world?

What are you contributing to live in a better world in 2024?

$1000.00 for a date with my husband that includes going to the local garden shop to choose plants and seeds to create our own summer climate-victory-garden. Bonus, in this process we are growing good food and cultivating a healthy relationship. And I love that!

FLOW FIVE FRIDAY: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.

$5.00: This week’s five dollars were sent to the nonprofit/for-impact organization called Green America. I am supporting their Toolkit project for growing healthy food for a healthy planet. The address is 1612 K Street, NW Suite 600, Washington D.C. 20006. How green can you stand it? I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.

Five Increments of Time: This week I listened to nine-year-old Thomas read his last fourth grade book before school ended. He is so happy for summer vacation to begin. Being there. How are you “Flowing Five” this week?

Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time.

I have been going to bed early this week. My body has demanded more rest, and instead of resisting, I am choosing to lean into a good night of sleep. What are you doing or not doing for self-care?

Planet Awareness: Contributing to the health of Earth.

Go outside. Smell the flowers. See the beauty. Hear the peace on a forest path. Touch a beach with your bare feet. Taste fresh, organic produce. Fill your senses with the gifts of nature. Be grateful. Go outside.

What are you doing for the health of our planet?

Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention:

This week I am supporting my friend Tara. One of her Living Intentions is to be someone who gardens with ease. One way that you can help support Tara’s living intention is to close your eyes and imagine walking into a garden that fills your senses with joy. Visit a greenhouse, botanical or community garden. It has been said by poets and scholars through the centuries that love flourishes when we tend a garden. I invite you to get grounded, play in the dirt, and plant a few seeds. Gardening is a form of sacred self-care. How nurtured can you stand it?

Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
