HERE IS MY PLAN: Saddle Up
“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is the best use of our time.” –John Lebbock
How are you showing up in the world?
Happy Solstice! It is the first official week of summer 2024. Where do you go to swim or dip your toes in the water? I wonder what your summers were like as a child. Did your family send you to camp? In my youth one week every summer the park district in my childhood hometown offered a “day camp” experience. We played games, sang silly songs, ate snacks, and did arts and craft projects with other children. These supervised activities also gave parents a few hours off from keeping us entertained. However, my summer happy place was on my grandparents’ farm because I could spend endless hours with the horses. Inspired by the joy these memories stir inside my heart, one of my summer traditions is to support The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. This camp was founded in 1988 by actor Paul Newman. His intention was to lean into the joy of life by sharing the magic of camp with kids in medical need. Their mission is to “Provide a different kind of healing experience to seriously ill children and their families, free of charge. Giving them a chance to experience the world of possibilities that camp has to offer, including those who may not be able to physically come to Camp.” Learn more here.
How much unplugged stillness can you stand this season? What brings you joy? Do more of that and be a better human. How are you showing up in the world?
$100.00: These dollars are supporting my summer selfcare. I am stocking up on sunscreen and buying a big floppy hat so that I can play outside more often. And I love that!
$0: Priceless: No School in the Summer
“Some of the best memories are made in flip-flops.” -Kellie Elmore
When was the last time that you swapped childhood summer adventure stories with friends or family. There was No school in the summer! Some of us went swimming, hiking, camping in the yard, or played little league baseball, soccer, or tennis. Several spent all season at grandmas. Others share stories about having pony rides at the carnival in town, living at the public library, going fishing, and remembering a neighborhood full of children playing outside until dark. Transportation was bicycles, favorite food was made on the grill followed with homemade ice cream and fresh picked strawberries from the family garden. Did you go to camp? Have you ever caught a firefly? How many stars can you see tonight? What is your summer story? How much play can you stand? What color are your flip-flops? Enjoy the season.
$5,000.00: these dollars are supporting the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Specifically, this money is targeting items on the 2024 General Wish List which contains the following: fishing hooks and bobbers, rain ponchos, socks, flat sheets, hot glue sticks, sandpaper, cupcake liners, and a new or used riding lawn mower. The wish list has many more items. I went on a treasure hunt in my house and packed a box of stuff to send to camp. Check it out here.
$77,400.00: donation to support the horse program at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. Because I imagine life is better when you are with a horse. What I know for sure is that horses have magical healing powers. I will rest easy knowing that the horses are being well cared for and loved. How does it get better than having horses at camp?
$3,000.00: these dollars are supporting the Hole in the Wall Gang camp. I am consciously expanding humanity for the world by focusing on joyful kindness to contribute to a better world for all. Everyone can do something to make a difference. Send a kid to camp. Respond to life with love. Repeat. What would it take? What are you contributing to live in a better world in 2024?
$1000.00: for a date with my husband that includes a catch and release fishing expedition. You will find me on shore doodling in a sketchbook while he plays in the water. Summer adventures. How loved can you stand it?
FLOW FIVE FRIDAY: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.
$5.00: this week’s five dollars were sent to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. The address is 565 Ashford Center Road, Ashford, CT 06278. I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.
Five Increments of Time: This week I called a childhood friend from grade school. Even though she moved away in third grade we have remained friends. We swapped memories of the summer adventures that we have shared. One summer her dad took us to a friend’s farm to see a baby Clydesdale and a litter of dalmatian puppies. Best day ever! Being there. How are you “Flowing Five” this week?
Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time.
I am eating more fresh fruit and vegetables with ease. What are you doing or not doing for self-care?
Planet Awareness: Contributing to the health of Earth.
It’s time to start visiting and purchasing fresh food items at Farmer Markets. Researcher Stephen Bentley reports “that the environment may benefit the most from increased participation in farmers markets.” One benefit is that produce shipped out of the local area travels on average fifty times further than the items sold at the farmer’s market. Produce sold locally has been found to reduce both fuel and water usage. What if we can help ourselves and Mother Earth as easily as shopping at local Farmers Markets? What are you doing for the health of our planet?
Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention:
This week I am supporting my friend Marlene. One of her Living Intentions is to be in a job that she loves and generates more joy daily. Marlene started a new job this week. One way that you can help support Marlene’s living intention is to imagine her as the lucky girl who found the perfect job for her. That’s right, Marlene is finding joy daily as everything is working out better than she could dream possible. And perhaps you can tell someone about the joy you are experiencing at your work this week. As author Ester Hicks often writes “We get what we focus on whether we want it or not.” Find more joy in your daily life and share the feeling with others.
Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
