HERE IS MY PLAN: Unexpected Kindness

“Being kind is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change. We rise by lifting others.” – Rebecca Peter

How are you showing up in the world?

An ice cream cone landed in the dirt outside a small-town café. A little boy was sobbing with grief as he forlornly looked at the melting treat. A group of teenage boys walked towards the café and saw the little boy crying. One boy asked the mom if he could buy the child another cone. Mom said yes. The teenager bought a bigger ice cream treat. It came in a dish with the cone on top to prevent another fatal spill. The teenagers sat with the little boy as they all ate treats and talked about swimming and fishing and fireworks. Imagine hope fueled by compassion. That’s where I live. In a small ranching community where it is normal for me to witness human kindness. How are you showing up in the world?

$100.00: These dollars support my selfcare. I am paying for access to phone service. It is a luxury to freely connect with others. Connection matters. And I love that!

“Kindness is a form of wisdom that transforms humanity.” -Mare App

Choosing to be kinder to ourselves and others, especially when difficult situations attempt to commandeer our focus towards doom and gloom is a human workout. One of my favorite teachers, Mr. Glick, challenged us to be kinder and to find more joy in everyday moments. We were encouraged to be extra kind to others because he said that we never know “who is on life’s thin ice.” Glick taught us that the key to life is finding joy by paying attention and magnifying kindness in our daily actions. He also said that we never know when unexpected things will alter life as we know it. These life changes can happen in an instant. Instead of feeding our fears, he taught us to heighten our sense of joy by paying attention to our surroundings. I have practiced this “Glick” wisdom for many decades, and it has served me well. This week I witnessed the kindness of a teenager in the simple act of giving his ice cream to a little boy who dropped his cone in the dirt.  I am finding joy in the nuance moments of life. What I know for sure is that joy fuels choices to be kinder in life situations. Together, may our self-love be stronger than our self-doubt as we navigate the evolution of humanity. Who are you being in these challenging times and what kindnesses are you choosing to contribute?

$92,400.00:  These dollars are supporting the 50 Yard Challenge program offered for community impact by the nonprofit called We are Raising Men and Women Lawn Care Service. Their mission is “To Inspire Kids to Serve Others.”

This program offers free lawn care for seniors, the disabled, single parents, veterans, and other community members who do not have the resources to care for their yards. Mr. Rodney Smith Jr from Alabama created the “50 Yard Challenge” to inspire and teach youth the value of community service. The program is open to children in the United States between the ages of 8 to17.  Mr. Smith personally delivers a new lawn mower, weed whacker, and leaf blower to each child who completes and documents the 50 yards that they cared for in their community. How kind are you being? Learn more here.

I am consciously expanding humanity for the world by focusing on being kinder. Everyone can do something to make a difference. Respond to life with love. Repeat. What would it take? What are you contributing to live in a better world in 2024?

$1000.00: for a date with my husband that includes grilling corn on the cob and eating cold slices of watermelon. Making Summer meals and talking about life dreams together. How loved can you stand it?

FLOW FIVE FRIDAY: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.

$5.00: this week’s five-dollar bill was sent to Raising Men and Women Lawn Care Service. The address is PO Box 2182 Madison, AL 35758. I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.

Five increments of time: This week I listened to Chris read from one of his summer library book selections. The book is called Small Wonders: Jean-Henri Fabre and His World of Insects written by Matthew Clark Smith. Witnessing the delight of bugs through the eyes of a nine-year-old boy. Being there; how does it get better than that? How are you “Flowing Five” this week?

Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time.

This month my Living Intention focus is I am someone who is being kinder to myself daily. Even kinder than that! To heighten my awareness and attention on increasing self-kindness I am texting a friend to share one way that I was kind to myself each day.   What are you doing or not doing for self-care?

Planet Awareness: Contributing to the health of Earth.

Do you know about Plastic Free July? It is an environmental campaign started by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz who is the founder of the Plastic Free Foundation. “Millions of people across the globe take part every year, with many committing to reducing plastic pollution far beyond the month of July.” Imagine each person reducing at least one single-use plastic waste item at home or work or school this year. Wonder what the collective impact will create? What are you doing for the health of our planet? Learn more here.

Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention:

This week I am supporting my friend KP who is changing her career focus. She has been managing implementation and customer care teams for decades. One of her living intentions is to write and publish more books. This summer she is taking a sabbatical from her corporate work to write full time.  One way that you can help support KP’s living intention is to imagine her completing another manuscript and sending it off to be published. You can also give support by checking out a library book to read this summer. Every time you read a book; an author’s story contributes to humanity. What are you reading?

Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
