HERE IS MY PLAN: Smile and Lend a Hand
“Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing/ Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I show now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.” –Henri Nouwen
Every Sunday I meet on Zoom with a group of friends who live in different states. Many years ago, we met in a Weight Watchers meeting. Since Covid we support each other’s well being via weekly zoom calls. One friend now lives in Asheville North Carolina where the aftermath of Hurricane Helene has destroyed lives. My friend and her dog lived through the storm but are now without power and easy access to water. As soon as she was able to drive away, she went to her sisters, filled her car with bottled water and headed back to help her community. How are you showing up in the world?
$100.00: Self-care. I am adding a solar powered flashlight to my emergency “Go Bag”. And I love that!
$0: Priceless: Smile
“A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” –Phyllis Diller
Today is the 23rd anniversary of World Smile Day. This event was founded by freelance artist Harvey Ball who created the “Smiley” Face button in 1963 to improve morale at an insurance company. The theme of World Smile Day is “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.” It costs nothing and can make a difference in our world. One of my favorite “Smile” stories occurred at my first job where I was working as a cashier in a big box retail store. It was on a busy autumn Sunday where customers were gathered in long lines with overflowing carts full of sale items. There was an old man grumping about the wait when a young girl standing in line behind him pulled on his jacket. The old man looked down and gruffly said, “what do you want?” The girl took a Smiley Face pin off her coat and gave it to the old man. She said with a gentle grin: “This button will help you find your smile.” He graciously took the button, put it on his jacket and stopped complaining. Our joyful moments are stored in the memory banks of our mind and can be reused to release a surge of happiness chemicals in the body on command. That’s right, one way that we can infuse our current situations with a joy booster is to simply imagine a joyful moment from the past. And you can create a current joy moment by sharing your smile. How are you serving humanity today?
$137,900.00 This money is supporting the Red Cross, Hurricane-Helene-North Carolina-Response. $1000.00: It’s October! This week’s date with my husband includes pumpkin hunting at a local farm. Pumpkins activate my smile with pure joy. How much pumpkin fun can you stand?
Flow Five Friday: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.
$5.00: this week’s five dollars were sent to the American Red Cross. The address is PO Box 37839 Boone, IA 50037-0839. I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.
Five increments of time: This week I listened to my 94-year-old mother tell me about her current life dreams. Being there; how does it get better than that? How are you “Flowing Five” this week?
Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time. I am looking people in the eyes and smiling. Connection Matters. It costs nothing and makes this world a better place by elevating our own happiness. No matter what is going on in life, we get to choose how we feel. What are you doing or not doing for self-care?
Planet Awareness: Contributing to the health of Earth.
I have added a ten-minute heart centered Earth focused meditation to my daily routine. The intention is to increase the length of time that I can maintain a calm and joyous mind. In the Dali Lama’s book called: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World he writes about meditation research being conducted at the University of Kassel in Germany. What the scientists have discovered is that “the human chest area of an average person emits 20 photons of light per second, someone who meditates on their heart center and sends love and light to others emits 100,000 photons per second. That is 5000 times more than the average human being. Studies also show that when these photons are infused with a loving and healing intent, their frequency and vibration increases to the point where they can literally change matter, heal disease, and transform negative events. They conclude that those ten minutes of meditation on compassion, on kindness for others, and sending loving light gives the meditator positive results with effects that can last all day.”
I am connecting to Earth while generating 100,000 photons per second during my meditation practice. What if Earth can benefit from these photons as well as people? What are you doing for the health of our planet?
Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention:
This week I am supporting my friend Brooke. Her living intention is to contribute to the wellbeing of her Ashville, North Carolina community. One way that you can help support Brooke’s living intention is to imagine her community receiving more than enough assistance to rebuild and thrive. In the meantime, donate to your favorite charity and send safe, clean, fresh drinking water supplies to your local food bank to support your community members.
Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
