HERE IS MY PLAN: Community Service
“Both young children and old people have a lot of time on their hands. That is probably why they get along so well.” –Jonathan Carroll
Daily, my dear friend’s elderly husband Mr. Don takes a walk with his beloved Chihuahua Peaches to the neighborhood mailbox bank located at the far end of the block. Due to a combination of age and the little dogs leg size, they move slowly. This meandering speed invites young neighborhood children to notice and start conversations with the pair of walkers. The children talk to Peaches and ask Mr. Don lots of questions about his dog, and about the changing seasons, why are the leaves changing colors and falling off the trees, why this and why that and how does this work? Mr. Don enjoys the questions that children ask him on his walk to the mailbox. He gladly stops and entertains their curiosity with conversations. So, yesterday when the children noticed their friend sitting in a chair slowly raking leaves from his lawn and painstakingly putting them into trash bags, the children jumped into action. Imagine a five-year-old and a three-year-old with child sized rakes coming to help Mr. Don bag the fallen leaves. Impressively they helped until the job was completed. Kindness grows kindness. Take time to have a conversation with another today. We can all make a difference. Hope grows when we stop to talk or stop to help another person. How are you showing up in the world?
$100.00: Self-care. It’s time to add layers to my wardrobe. A warm vest and gloves will help keep the Fall chill at bay as I go leaf peeping in the National Forest near our home. And I love that!
$0: Priceless: Lend an ear. Lend a hand.
“Volunteering is at the very core of being a human. No one has made it through life without someone else’s help.” Heather French Henry
Participating in Community Service. Saturday marks thirty-two years of Make a Difference Day. “The initial event was created when USA Weekend magazine partnered with the nonprofit Points of Light to sponsor a National Day of Community service. Although the magazine closed in 2014, and Covid demanded creative alternatives, many other nonprofits have continued recognizing the fourth Saturday in October as a day to make a difference in our communities.” When was the last time you participated in a community service project? Make time for others. Lend an ear or lend a hand. What would it take to be more present in your community today?
$148,400.00:
These dollars are contributing to the local youth organizations that are participating in community service projects this weekend. Volunteering makes a difference to both the givers and receivers. We can all do something kind. How open are you to living in a better world in 2024? Respond to life with love. Repeat. What would it take?
$1000.00: This week’s date includes working on a trail we like to hike in our community. We will be clearing fallen branches from the walking pathways and picking up trash along the way. Volunteering has been a consistent component in our relationship. Together we make a difference. How loved can you stand it?
Flow Five Friday:Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.
$5.00: this week’s five-dollar bill will be found inside the book called Horton Hears a Who!Written by Dr. Suess. The story is about caring for others. This book is in one of our communities “Little Free Libraries.” Do you know where to find Little Free Libraries in your neighborhood? I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life. Five increments of time:Bently is nine years old and in the 4th grade. I have been listening to him read since last school year. This week Bently read his science book with delight. It is called: The Science of Poop and Farts: The Smelly Truth About Digestion by author Alex Woolf. It is a privilege to witness the curiosity and humor of this little person. Every time he said the word “fart”, Bently bellied laughed before we could continue reading. Being there; how does it get better than that? How are you “Flowing Five” this week?
Well-Being:
Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time.
I am volunteering in my community with my husband. And I love that!
What are you doing or not doing for self-care?
Planet Awareness:Contributing to the health of Earth.
Small acts of kindness: I am aware that composting food waste vs adding more trash to a landfill makes a difference. An act of “Earth gratitude” can be as simple as saving one withering spinach leaf by composting it with love. What are you doing for the health of our planet?

Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention:
This week I am supporting my friend Geni who is helping entrepreneurs in her community expand their businesses with more joyful marketing. One of Gene’s living intentions is to record and share people’s life stories to encourage people to value their business origin stories. Every story creates a web of connections for others to navigate their journey with access to resources making business connections more accessible as well as successful with more ease. One way that you can help support Geni’s living intention is to listen to her podcast and give her 5 stars today. You will find the podcast on Apple or Spotify or your favorite listening platform.
