HERE IS MY PLAN: Rumble with Grief
“If you love your mom, it’s tough when she dies. It doesn’t matter who my mother was; It matters who I remember she was.” –Anne Sexton
How are you showing up in the world?
It feels surreal to say that my mother transitioned from her human experience this week. At 94 she often shared her excitement about the adventure of returning to her divine spirit self. Especially since dad left about three months ago. However, it was still a shock for the family members who are left wondering how it could be so sudden. One day she was playing games and chattering up a storm. The next day she complained of excruciating pain and the doctor informed the family that she was dying. And poof, she was gone. Even though I lived thousands of miles apart from my mother, we talked on the phone daily. I would send her cards and works of art monthly. I am a lucky girl. I had an amazing mother who gave her nine children the gift of freedom to be comfortable being themselves. That is saying something because we are very different from each other. She loved us and met us where we were in life. How does it get even better than that? I invite you to consider connecting with your mom or doing a random act of kindness in her name. I am rumbling with grief and choosing to respond with love. Simple, but not easy. How are you showing up in the world?
$100.00: Self-care. I am buying new sheets for our bed. Mother always made sure we had beautiful, good quality sheets. And I love that!
0$ Priceless: Respond with love.
““Grief and love are conjoined, you don’t get one without the other. All I can do is love her, and love the world, emulate her by living with daring and spirit and joy.” – Jandy Nelson
Peace from grief is accessible when I choose to spend time in nature. Walking in nature daily is a priority. Especially this week. Since we live very close to National and State Forest lands, I have the luxury of immersing myself in the energy of tree canopies. The scent of live pines is intoxicating, the quiet of the deep woods allows anxieties to dissipate and be replaced with epic tranquility. Today, I walk in peace and live with more ease as I remember the gifts of love from my mother.
“When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks, and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me daily.
I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world but walk slowly and bow often.
Around me the trees stir in their leaves and call out, “Stay awhile.”
The light flows from their branches.
And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,
“And you too have come into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine.” (Poem by Mary Oliver)
Wherever you are in the world, my wish for you is the opportunity to go outside and be with nature. Find your peace and know that you are loved. Did you know that The Friday after Thanksgiving citizens of Colorado are invited to participate in one of the “Fresh-Air-Friday-Colorado” adventures offered in the state parks. Today all 41 Colorado Parks and Wildlife locations are waiving admission fees. In Montana, state parks are always free with your annual vehicle license plate tag. What is available where you live? Take the time to slow down, live a story worth telling and experience the Outdoors as often as possible. How are you showing up in the world?

$165,900.00: I am contributing these dollars to support family and friends choosing a life adventure in my mother’s name. She was open to new experiences, an adventurer, a world traveler, a scholar, an avid reader, a puzzle master, a loving wife, a loving mother, a loving grandmother, a loving friend, an advocate for women’s rights, and so much more. Go out and choose adventures in your life. Be you and the world will be a better place for all. How open are you to living in a better world in 2024? Respond to life with love. Repeat. What would it take?

$1000.00: This week’s date with my husband includes another hike in a local National Forest. You will find us walking in the embrace of a pine forest together. As naturalist John Muir once said: “in every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” What if we can leave the world better than we found it? How much love can you stand?
Flow Five Friday: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.
$5.00: this week’s five-dollar bill was placed into a Red Kettle for the Salvation Army annual holiday drive to help feed others. I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.
I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.
Five increments of time: This week I gave support, asked for support and received support. Just send love. Being there; how does it get better than that? How are you “Flowing Five” this week?
Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time.
I am asking for what I need. Which is for my friends to not say that they are “sorry” but instead send their love or say that they love me. Love allows me to feel all the feelings as I both grieve and celebrate my mother. And I love that! What are you doing or not doing for self-care?
Planet Awareness: Contributing to the health of Earth.
Therapist and Earth advocate, Denise McDermott facilitates conversations about climate anxiety and joy. She invites us to consider Earth as a jigsaw puzzle composed of a billion plus pieces. McDermott says, “The most important thing you need to do is take care of your piece, because if it’s raggedy or you can’t find it or the edges are frayed, the other pieces can’t connect to it.”
What are you doing for the health of our planet?
Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention:
This week I am supporting family members as we process our mother’s launch into her next spiritual adventure. One of Mom’s Living Intentions was to be someone who lived a story worth telling. Oh, the stories she created in this wonderful lifetime! One way that you can help support Mom’s Living Intention to live a story worth telling is to choose a life adventure for yourself today. Do something new, call someone and tell them that you love them, or do the thing that you have been dreaming to do. Poof! Mother has gone from this human experience but her legacy to choose adventure is lived on with love. Be You and the world will be a better place for us all. If you are reading this weekly message know that You are Loved just for being you. See you next week!
Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
