HERE IS MY PLAN: Summer Adventure Plans

“Summer is the annual permission slip to be lazy. To do nothing and have it count for something. To lie in the grass and count the stars. To sit on a branch and study the clouds.” -Regina Brett

How are you showing up in the world?

I am starting my 5th summer of reading with children from our old neighborhood over Zoom. This practice started in 2020 when the Covid pandemic was all the rage. The intention was to give parents a break and provide a safe, productive one on one connection for the participating children. During the school year my contribution consisted of being a sounding board or resource to focus on homework assignments. I listened to the children read, gave feedback on their school papers, brainstormed ideas for science projects and sometimes just listened to them talk about life stuff. The connection that I made with the children spills over into creating summer break learning quests. Several have mapped out plans to complete the public library reading challenge, Brenda is planning a family camping adventure, and this is Molly’s second summer leading the neighborhood club that the children call the “Earth Squad”. This Earth Squad develops summer adventures with a focus on having fun and making a difference. They create friendly team competitions where the goals are made to be reached as a squad instead of as individuals. They pick up litter in parks, plan recycle games, count birds, swap nature books and photograph things they find outside. The children’s excitement about making summer plans is contagious.  I too have created a summer reading list and researched several new experiences to consider doing that are close to home this summer. Let the summer reading adventures begin!  How are you showing up in the world?

$100.00: for self-care.  I am buying a stack of summer books to read with the children. And I love that!

$0: Priceless: Rainbow Walks in the Summertime.

“I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees.”-Henry David Thoreau

When was the last time you took a Rainbow Walk with a friend? I like talking with my friends about their dreams and inviting them to give each dream a color. Then I suggest that they write in a journal each time they see that dream color throughout the day. When I walk with a child, I suggest we look for all the colors in a rainbow. Author Cait Flanders writes that “Rainbow walks are a fun way to engage your senses and be more present and potentially find lots of details you wouldn’t normally notice.”

I find looking for colors as I explore nature or visit new places a delightful way to learn new things with friends, this practice is especially joyful in the summer. I am consciously expanding the wellbeing of humanity by focusing on enjoying every little thing in nature as well as deepening my connection with friends. What color is your current dream? Where did you see your dream color today? As you begin to play, colors seem to pop out everywhere you look!

$47,400: These dollars are going to support a summer reading program at a local public library. They can purchase books, increase online access to materials for their community to enjoy and hire a summer intern to read more with the children.

$30,000: These dollars are being donated to the nonprofit called American Hiking Society. Specifically, this money is supporting education programs that encourage people to use National Trails more often through volunteer stewardship. Learn more here: LEARN MORE HERE!

Everyone can do something to make a difference. What are you choosing to enjoy this summer?

$1000.00: for a date with my husband. We are creating a couple’s summer adventure plan together.

How loved can you stand it?

Flow Five Friday: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.

$5.00: This week the five bill is inside the library book called 100 Days of Adventure: Nature Activities, Creative Projects and Field Trips for Every Season written by Greta Eskridge. I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.

Five Increments of Time: What are you reading this summer? This week I started making plans with children to participate in summer reading challenges at their local libraries. My contribution is to meet with them weekly over zoom to hear about the books that they are reading, ask them questions and encourage them to reach the next level. Being there. How are you “Flowing Five” this week?

Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time.

This summer I am challenging myself to learn or experience something new daily. Researchers at the University of California, Berkley report that curiosity is associated with higher levels of positive emotions, lower levels of anxiety, more satisfaction with life, and greater psychological well-being. What are you doing or not doing for self-care?

Planet Awareness: Contributing to the health of Earth.

Invite someone to take a Rainbow Walk with you. Stroll along a dirt path. Find the beautiful colors of all the plants and animals that you experience on your trek. Remember to “Leave the trail better than you found it” as you wander your neighborhood or hometown trails. Heighten your awareness of nature’s gifts by hunting for the rainbow colors with friends. Life is better when we choose to spend time in nature’s embrace. What are you doing for the health of our planet?

Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention

This week I am supporting my friend Kathryn who is hosting an event to raise awareness and funds to contribute to the wellbeing of First Responders. One of her Living Intentions is to activate the community to contribute to the health of front-line helpers in the traumatic event cycle: Emergency Call Center Operators; Fire Departments; Law Enforcement; Ambulance Teams; Emergency Room Staff; and the Judiciary Teams. One way that you can help support Kathryn’s living intention is to help the helpers is to read about the event below. If you live in Colorado, consider attending to support her dream. The tickets are free, and it is going to be a lot of fun.

Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
