How are you showing up in the world?

The children are going back to school. I have added a few new students to my volunteer zoom reading sessions. I like the excitement and buzz generated when school begins again each year. Do you remember having a favorite teacher? About six years ago our neighbor Sam started first grade. However, he went into Mrs. Garcia’s kindergarten classroom and took a seat.  She told him that this year he would have a new teacher and be in a different classroom. “No”, Sam said “you are my teacher, and I am staying here”. Even the Principle could not get Sam to go to the first-grade room. They called his mom. Mr. Crawford the Principle stayed in the kindergarten class while mom and Mrs. Garcia walked Sam to first grade. Day two Sam was back in Mrs. Garcia’s classroom.   When asked why he was there Sam said, “you are my teacher, I don’t like Mrs. Shiner.” Day three, instead of just dropping him off, mom walked him to Mrs. Shiner’s room. Under protest Sam did stay in first grade the rest of the week. What if we could choose our teachers? What would you like to learn this school season? Take a class, read a book, or watch a YouTube video. How are you showing up in the world?

$100.00: Self-care. These dollars are being spent on taking a class with a new teacher. She is a biology teacher. I will be learning to heighten my awareness of nature’s gifts. I am learning something new, and I love that!

$0: Priceless: School Supplies

The current dismantling of the Department of Education and subsequent funding cuts, has many teachers unsure of what materials will be available this school year. According to research conducted by Adopt a Classroom, 96% of teachers use their own money to buy classroom supplies. That is a sad fact. And I wonder what is possible if we choose to invest in the current generation of schoolchildren. These students will be making policy decisions and voting when we are senior citizens. I want to ensure that teachers have the best tools available to nurture critical thinking and problem-solving skills for a better life for all of us. $42,000.00 I am sponsoring Mrs. Garcia’s Kindergarten classroom through the Adopt a Classroom organization. She can spend these dollars to improve the learning environment with technology or supplies or food for the students. When a teacher has plenty of money for school supplies to help their students learn in the classroom, what else is possible?

$33,000.00 I am donating to the Young Americans Center for Financial Education. The mission of Young Americans Center is to develop the financial literacy of young people.  Imagine being armed with the basic financial knowledge and skills to ensure long-term stability for yourself and your family. This week I am supporting Sonia, who is a 3^rd grade teacher. One of her living intentions is to be someone who loves to go to work. This is her ninth year of teaching.  One way that you can help support Sonia’s living intention is to imagine her excitedly telling us delightful stories about her students this year. Or perhaps you can ask a teacher that you know to share one of their best days teaching and why. Teachers who love their work fuel generations with skills and hope to live their best lives. I want more teachers like Sonia in the world. Who was your favorite teacher and why?
