HERE IS MY PLAN: Science Works

“Surviving breast cancer redefined who and how I am, although I’m not sure I’d recommend it. Until then, I’d spent a lifetime being a caretaker for everyone around me. From then on, I started to put myself first. I had voices at the back of my head telling me whatever I did wasn’t good enough. Now, finally, I’ve silenced them.” Sheryl Crow

How are you showing up in the world?

It was during an annual exam that an abnormality was discovered in one of my breasts. Gratefully, we had health insurance to cover most of the ensuing costs of treatments. It was a challenging time. Luckily, I was supported by great waves of love from friends, co-workers, family, and medical staff.  The greatest love came from my husband. He scheduled work meetings around my doctor’s appointments. Each time I went into a treatment he would hold my face, look into my eyes, and then kiss me as though he was filling me up with his protective love. He was running late several times due to crosstown traffic. The medical staff enthusiastically waited for him to arrive before starting any procedure. His ritual kiss had a positive effect on the whole team. I am a breast cancer “thriver”. Be the best version of yourself today. Ask the women in your life if they have scheduled their annual mammogram. How are you showing up the world?

$100.00: Self-care. I am adding the updated 3D imagery to my annual breast exam. Also, I am encouraging and holding friends/family accountable for scheduling annual mammograms. How much self-care can you stand? What is a mammogram? Learn more here About Mammograms

$0: Priceless: Science, Medical Providers and Health Insurance.

“I wish I could say I’m fearless, that each time I have a scan or blood draw I’m not anxious or stressed. But I’m getting brave. Once you’re faced with the fear of death, or not knowing what tomorrow brings, you’re like, ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ I’m working on not allowing fear to be my primary driving factor and living by the lessons I’ve learned so far: Keep breathing. Being mindful. Being grateful. Believing that the universe has a plan for me that is better than the one I could ever imagine.” –Sheetal Dewan

Today marks the 32nd anniversary of National Mammography Day.

Important to me because a routine mammogram saved my life. In gratitude, I walk side by side with others on their health journey. I remember when my friend Lynn called, and I could hear the crackling of fear in her voice. She had a mammogram in the first week of October. A day later the doctor’s office called and scheduled a biopsy. Since we have been friends for a very long time, she knew about my experience with breast cancer and wanted me to walk her through what to expect.  We talked off and on for days leading up to the biopsy and more intensely during the deep dark waiting periods of not knowing what would be revealed. I am grateful to be alive to support others who are confronted with concerning news and requests for help to navigate emotions as well as the decisions that need to be made without the luxury of time to be introspective or conduct more research. Lynn’s biopsy results discovered nothing more than calcification spots due to aging.  I encourage and support the women in my life to get health screenings. Science matters. Health insurance matters. You matter.

$143,900.00: These dollars are helping to fund grants for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I give because sisters matter. This organization supports ongoing research that is contributing to improving breast health with prevention, detection, and treatment for all. Started in 1993 this non-profit “seeks out the brightest minds in science and medicine and gives them the necessary resources to pursue their best ideas. As a result, researchers can make discoveries and design new approaches to address all aspects of breast cancer—and do so in record time”. Learn more here: Breast Cancer Research Foundation

Respond to life with love. Repeat. What would it take?

$1000.00: This week’s date includes an annual Zoom dinner with several other couples who experienced lifesaving cancer treatments during the same time as we did. Celebrating being able to spend more days with people who matter. How loved can you stand it?

Flow Five Friday: Current “real” life expressions of gratitude, love, and contribution to wellbeing.

$5.00: this week’s five dollars were sent to a friend for her “Party in Pink” collection jar. I am grateful to be living and able to contribute to the health of others. I wonder what is possible now.  I am choosing to be the energy of what works in life.

Five increments of time: I attended a friend’s annual Zoom “party in pink” to remember her mom. It’s a tradition she created ten years ago to share memories with family and friends. We gather to celebrate her life and encourage her children to ask questions and hear stories about their grandmother.  The monies collected each year through this event are given to a group of women who knit hats for people undergoing treatments at the hospital. Celebrating a life well lived by sharing stories with generations of family and friends. Being there; how does it get better than that? How are you “Flowing Five” this week?

Well-Being: Something that I am doing or not doing for self-care in real time.

I scheduled my annual mammography appointment. And I love that!

What are you doing or not doing for self-care?

Hold Space or Contribute to a Friends Life Intention

This week I am supporting my friend Kristina who is speaking at a conference on Monday. One of Kristina’s living intentions is to be a successful coach who activates healthy communications between men and women. Her genius zone is working with people 45 and older to help them find joy in meaningful connections with others. Every time I spend a few moments with Kristina I feel good about life again! One way that you can help support Kristina’s living intention to be recognized as a successful communicator coach is to register for the virtual workshop she is speaking at on Monday. It is FREE and they have a contest.  Kristina wrote: “The person who wins gets confetti thrown on them at the end of the event.  Who doesn’t want confetti stuck in their hair?  There are some other AWESOME speakers participating.  But the most important thing is the confetti. Here’s the sign up link”  Be Unstoppable!

Choose joy. Be kind. Love others and strive to be a better human. What would it take?
